The S & P 500 hit a fresh intraday record on Friday, building on what was a stellar February for Wall Street. But some stocks on Wall Street may be getting ahead of themselves, while others that have been under pressure could reverse course. Using our stock screener tool, CNBC Pro searched for the most overbought and oversold stocks on Wall Street, measured by their 14-day relative strength index (RSI). Stocks with a 14-day RSI above 70 are thought to be overbought, indicating that shares could soon experience a downturn. Shares of renewable energy firm Constellation Energy are also among the most overbought stocks on Wall Street, with a 14-day RSI of 85.6.

CVS, which owns health insurer Aetna, on Wednesday slashed its full-year profit outlook, citing the potential for higher medical costs to bite into its profits. Last month, Humana said it saw an even bigger jump in medical costs in the fourth quarter. Higher medical costs may be a larger problem for Humana than they are for CVS and other insurers. They added that there is no other part of Humana's business that could meaningfully dampen the hit from higher medical costs on the insurance side. Another insurance giant that has been seeing higher medical costs, UnitedHealth Group, also has large health-care services and pharmacy operations that diversify its earnings streams.

Photographer: Luke Sharrett/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesShares of Humana plummeted on Thursday after the health insurer issued dismal full-year earnings guidance, citing soaring medical costs that are dogging the broader insurance industry. The guidance adds to Wall Street's concerns about health insurance company profits falling as medical costs jump. UnitedHealth on Friday also reported its own jump in medical costs, though it was less extreme than Humana's. Its forecast dragged down other health insurance stocks. But unlike Humana, the insurer forecast 2024 earnings above estimates on Wednesday, after higher premiums in its commercial business helped control medical costs in the fourth quarter.

Tesla — Shares of the automaker fell 8% after Tesla reported fourth-quarter results that missed estimates on the top and bottom lines and warned that vehicle volume growth may be "notably lower" in the new year. Tesla reported 71 cents in adjusted earnings per share on $25.17 billion of revenue. The company reported adjusted earnings of $3.87 per share on $17.38 billion in revenue. While Humana's fourth-quarter earnings were in line with prior guidance, the company guided for full-year earnings of $16, vastly under the $29.14 expected by FactSet. The company's fourth-quarter revenue of $2.92 billion also topped FactSet's predicted $2.89 billion.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 29 (Reuters) - Cigna (CI.N) and Humana (HUM.N), two of the biggest U.S. health insurers, are in talks for what could be the largest merger announced in 2023, according to a source familiar with the matter. A Humana and Cigna combination would give the merged company the scale to rival UnitedHealth Group (UNH.N) and CVS Health (CVS.N). In July 2016, the Justice Department filed lawsuits against two health insurance mergers on the same day, saying they would lead to less competition and higher prices for Americans. Health insurers have been facing higher medical costs as people return for procedures they had put off during the pandemic. Humana in February said that it would sell its commercial business but keep its Medicare Advantage products.

Shares of Cigna and Humana slid Wednesday after a report that the two health-care giants are in talks to merge. A Cigna spokesperson did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment on the report from The Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with the matter. A Humana spokesperson declined to comment. A Cigna spokesperson at the time said the company does not comment on "rumors or speculation." Some analysts have suggested that a potential combination with Humana could be a reason for Cigna to offload its Medicare Advantage business.

Insurer Humana's longtime CEO Broussard to step down next year

Oct 11 (Reuters) - Humana (HUM.N) CEO Bruce Broussard will step down in the second half of 2024 after more than a decade at the helm, the insurer said on Wednesday and named healthcare veteran Jim Rechtin as his successor. Shares of the company, which grew seven-fold in value under 61-year-old Broussard, fell 2.8% to $486.4 in premarket trading. He led Humana to become the second-largest provider of Medicare Advantage in the U.S. by tripling its membership for the government-backed program to more than 5 million customers. His successor, Rechtin, will join Humana from Envision Healthcare, a U.S. provider of physicians where he is CEO and president. Broussard also helped the insurer expand beyond Medicare Advantage plans for older adults with the launch of healthcare services under the CenterWell brand in 2021.

Humana CEO Bruce Broussard will step down next year after more than a decade leading the health-insurance giant. Humana has tapped Jim Rechtin, head of Envision Healthcare, to be its next CEO. Weaving together insurance benefits with care delivery is meant to make healthcare easier for people to navigate and improve patients' health, Broussard said. One example is Humana's recent push into behavioral healthcare, Broussard said. That startup will eventually become part of Humana, Broussard said.

With the stock market deeply oversold this week, we put cash to work by picking stocks across a range of sectors including energy, technology and materials. With the market oversold, per the S & P 500 Short Range Oscillator , our investment discipline called for us to search for any dislocations within the portfolio. Tech stocks remained under pressure Tuesday afternoon, giving us an opportunity to buy 7 shares of Broadcom and lower our cost basis. But stocks returned to the red Thursday, and the market remained firmly in oversold territory. However, the market reversed course in midday trading, with all three major U.S. stock benchmarks trading sharply higher.

September has been unkind to stocks – living up to its historical reputation as the weakest month for the S & P 500 . Still, some Club stocks have been able to buck the downward trend since the start of the month — and none more so than Humana (HUM). The health insurer advanced 7.3% through Friday's close, putting it among the top-10 performing stocks in the S & P 500 over that stretch. In a year largely characterized by outperformance in technology stocks, health care has been one of the worst S & P 500 sectors . The stock entered Monday's session down more than 11% in 2023, the third-worst of any Club stock.

Humana shares rose Wednesday after the health insurer said medical costs came in lower than expected during its second-quarter earnings report. Humana reported a medical loss ratio, the percentage of premiums it spends on medical care, of 86.3% for the second quarter. Humana highlighted a "stabilizing Medicare Advantage utilization environment" based on the most recent claims activity, without elaborating. The company said in June it expected its second-quarter medical loss ratio to be toward the top range of its full-year outlook of 86.3% to 87.3%. Shares are down about 5% for the year after the broader health-care sector took a beating in June, putting the company's market value at around $60 billion.

Not only did second-quarter numbers top expectations, but management offered assuring commentary on the worrisome medical-cost trends that torpedoed its stock price in mid-June .
